scSTREAM Used to Help Design Information and Telecommunications Facilities in China

Ever increasing cell phone usage in China has spurred expansion of cell phone communication networks and construction of several new information and telecommunications facilities.  These network facilities generate large amounts of heat which must be cooled to keep equipment at proper operating temperatures.  To minimize energy consumption, a major challenge is to design the facilities to dissipate this heat while taking full advantage of natural convection and localized cooling.

Shanghai Posts and Telecommunications Designing Consulting Institute Co. Ltd (SPCTDCIC) selected Cradle scSTREAM structured grid CFD software to simulate the thermo/fluid environment for the No. 2 Bailianjing and the No. 13 Nanshui Data Centers.

SPCTDCIC needed CFD software that was fast, robust, and easily used by engineers with little CFD experience, all of which are characteristics of scSTREAM.  CFD was used to visualize air flow patterns and temperatures, evaluate air exchange, air flow rates, and temperature settings.  A scSTREAM user function was used to simulate air flow setting fluctuations as a function of the inside temperature.

CFD simulations were used to optimize the building/ventilation system design to take full advantage of natural convection cooling when the outside ambient temperatures are low.   A fan is used for supplementary cooling at the No. 2 Bailianjing facility.  At the No. 13 Nashui facility, both a heat exchange tank/tube system and a fan are used for additional localized cooling.

This work was presented in a pavilion at Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
